One of the most common questions pet parents have about mobile veterinary care is how pricing compares to a traditional clinic visit. While mobile care may look different on paper, understanding what’s included and what it replaces helps put costs into perspective.
This guide explains how mobile veterinary pricing works, what factors influence cost, how mobile care compares to clinic-based care, and how WoofDoctor on Wheels helps families plan for their pet’s care with clarity and confidence.

How Mobile Veterinary Pricing Work
Mobile veterinary care is structured differently than traditional clinic care because the veterinarian, medical equipment, and services come directly to your home.
At WoofDoctor on Wheels, pricing is transparent and typically includes three main components:
- A travel fee
- An exam fee
- Services and products provided during the visit, which may include:
- Any diagnostics, treatments, or procedures performed during the visit
- Medications or supplies as needed
This model reflects the time, expertise, equipment, and personalized attention required to deliver comprehensive veterinary care in a home setting. Unlike a busy clinic environment, mobile visits are designed to focus on one household at a time, allowing for calmer exams, more thorough discussions, and truly individualized care.
Two Types of In-Home Visits with WoofDoctor on Wheels
WoofDoctor on Wheels offers two types of in-home visits:
- Veterinary Care Visits with Dr. Doug Cifranick
- In-home care visits with our veterinary technician team
Veterinary Care Visits with Dr. Doug Cifranick
Veterinary care appointments are provided by Dr. Doug Cifranick, lead veterinarian and owner of WoofDoctor on Wheels, along with a trained assistant.
Our primary mobile unit is fully equipped with:
- A surgical suite
- A dental care area
- Diagnostic equipment
- Medications and vaccines
- Tools needed for comprehensive wellness exams and routine procedures
This unit is used for annual exams, sick visits, dental cleanings, minor procedures, diagnostics, and ongoing medical care. When you see our large mobile clinic arrive, this is the unit delivering full veterinary services to your home. Tour our Mobile Unit here or watch this video to see more.
In-Home Care Visits with Our Veterinary Technician Team
Some in-home visits do not require a full veterinarian appointment. WoofDoctor on Wheels offers veterinary technician-led visits provided by our Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Jessica Parson, and her assistant, using a fully equipped mini mobile unit. These appointments are ideal for pets who need skilled medical care, monitoring, or routine wellness services while remaining under the guidance of Dr. Cifranick.
Veterinary technician visits fall into two categories:
- Veterinarian-Directed Technician Services
- Routine Wellness Technician Services
Veterinarian-Directed Technician Services
These visits support an existing care plan created by Dr. Cifranick or follow a recent exam, illness, or procedure. In many cases, a technician visit may be recommended instead of a full recheck appointment when the goal is to gather diagnostics, provide therapy, or monitor progress.
Examples may include lab work, ultrasound imaging when appropriate, laser therapy, chronic condition monitoring, follow-up care, or other medically guided services.
Routine Wellness Technician Services
Routine wellness visits focus on preventive care, comfort, and hygiene and can often be scheduled directly by pet parents. These predictable, recurring services are ideal for ongoing maintenance and helping pets stay comfortable year-round.
Common services include nail trims, ear cleaning or ear plucking, anal gland expression, monthly injections, medication applications, and similar wellness care.
Benefits
Because our technician team is trained to work closely with Dr. Cifranick, many pets can receive high-quality care without needing a full veterinarian appointment, saving time and cost while still receiving professional oversight. Learn more about in-home visits with our veterinary technicians here.
Pricing for Veterinary Technician Visits
All veterinary technician visits have the same fee, regardless of whether the visit is vet-directed or for routine wellness care. The appointment type does not change the technician visit fee. Any additional diagnostics, treatments, or products provided during the visit are itemized separately. Continue reading to learn more about the fee structure at WoofDoctor on Wheels.

What the Travel Fee Covers
The travel fee often stands out first, but it supports much more than transportation alone.
At WoofDoctor on Wheels, the travel fee helps cover:
- Transportation of medical equipment and supplies
- Travel time between households
- Fuel and vehicle maintenance
- A fully equipped mobile medical setup
- Extended, uninterrupted appointment time
- Reduced patient stress and handling needs
Importantly, the travel fee applies per household, not per pet, which makes mobile care especially efficient and cost-effective for families with multiple pets.
Why Is There a Travel Fee if We’re Fully Mobile?
Because we operate exclusively as a mobile practice, travel time and logistics are a core part of delivering care. The travel fee reflects both the time required to reach your location and the operational costs of running a mobile medical facility.
Why Is There a Travel Fee Range?
Some locations fall within our extended travel zone, requiring additional time and limited access routes. These locations carry a higher travel fee, including:
- Yemassee
- Fripp Island
- Hilton Head Island
- Certain areas of Ridgeland (address-dependent)
What the Exam Fee Covers
The exam fee covers the medical consultation and hands-on evaluation of your pet. This includes:
- A full head-to-tail physical examination
- Time spent discussing your pet’s history, lifestyle, and concerns
- Assessment of findings and medical recommendations
- Collaborative discussion of diagnostics, treatments, and next steps
For multi-pet households, each pet requires its own exam fee, as each receives an individual medical assessment.
The exam fee does not include diagnostics, lab work, vaccines, imaging, medications, or treatments performed during the visit.
Why Exam Fees Are Listed as a Range
Veterinarian Appointments
For visits with Dr. Cifranick, the exam fee range reflects the time and clinical focus required for different types of appointments.
- Standard exams (wellness visits or medical concerns) are billed at the lower end of the range.
- Quality of life and euthanasia exams are billed at the higher end, as these visits require additional time, in-depth discussion, and focused support for both pets and their families.
Veterinary Technician Appointments
For veterinary technician–led visits, the exam fee range is time-based, not service-based.
- Recheck visits following a recent consult or exam typically fall at the lower end of the range.
- Regular or extended technician consults may fall higher in the range when additional time is needed for assessment, monitoring, diagnostics, or therapeutic services.
This structure allows us to match the visit length and level of care to your pet’s specific needs, while keeping pricing clear and predictable.
Services, Treatments, & Products Provided During the Visit
This portion of the invoice reflects what is actually used or performed during your appointment, based on your pet’s needs. These may include:
- Diagnostic testing (blood work, lab panels, heartworm testing)
- Imaging (X-rays, ultrasound)
- Vaccinations
- Medications or injectable treatments
- Allergy testing
- Dental procedures
- Therapies such as laser or PRP
- Routine care services (nail trims, ear care, anal gland expression)
- Prescription diets or supplements
We review recommendations and estimated costs during your visit so you can make informed decisions without pressure.
Comparing Mobile Vet Care to Traditional Clinics
When comparing the cost of mobile veterinary care to a traditional clinic visit, it helps to look beyond individual line items and consider the full experience for both you and your pet.
What Traditional Clinic Visits Often Involve
Traditional veterinary care typically requires pets to leave their familiar environment and enter a setting that can be overwhelming, especially for cats, senior pets, and anxious dogs. Common factors include:
- Driving time, fuel costs, and transportation logistics
- Time away from work or rearranged family schedules
- Busy waiting rooms with unfamiliar animals, sounds, and smells
- Short appointment windows, often 15 to 20 minutes
- Increased fear, stress, or defensive behavior in some pets
- More handling, restraint, or pre-visit sedation for anxious animals
- Separate appointments for each pet in multi-pet households
- Follow-up visits when stress interferes with a thorough exam
Stress is not just emotional for pets. Elevated stress can affect heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory patterns, and even lab results. In cats especially, stress during clinic visits is a leading reason routine care is delayed or avoided altogether.
How Mobile Veterinary Care Changes the Experience
Mobile veterinary care removes many of these stressors by bringing care directly to your home, where pets already feel safe. At WoofDoctor on Wheels, this allows us to focus on quality of care rather than rushing through appointments.
Mobile care often provides:
- No travel or waiting room time
- Exams performed in a familiar, calm environment
- More relaxed pets and easier handling
- Longer appointment times that allow for thorough exams and discussion
- Better observation of behavior, mobility, and comfort in the home setting
- Coordinated care for multiple pets in a single visit
- Fewer stress-related complications and repeat visits
Because pets are calmer, we are often able to gather more accurate information, perform more complete exams, and make better-informed recommendations. This can lead to earlier detection of health issues and more effective preventive care.
Appointment Time & Quality of Care
One of the biggest differences families notice is time. Traditional clinics often operate on tightly scheduled appointment blocks. Mobile visits are intentionally structured to allow more time with the veterinarian.
At WoofDoctor on Wheels, first visits are longer so we can build rapport, gather a thorough history, and help pets feel comfortable before exams begin. Follow-up and annual visits remain unhurried and conversational. This additional time supports better understanding, clearer communication, and stronger partnerships between families and their veterinary team.
Cost & Value
We pride ourselves on keeping the cost of our services and products comparable to what you would expect at a traditional veterinary clinic. While mobile care includes a travel fee, many families find that the overall value balances out when hidden costs are considered.
When you factor in reduced travel expenses, fewer missed work hours, coordinated care for multiple pets, and lower stress for your pet, mobile care is often comparable in total cost and higher in overall value.
Looking at the Full Picture
Mobile veterinary care is not about replacing emergency hospitals or specialty centers. It is about delivering high-quality primary care in a way that prioritizes comfort, time, and individualized attention.
For many families, the combination of reduced stress, longer appointment times, accurate exams, and comparable pricing makes mobile veterinary care a thoughtful and practical choice for ongoing preventive and medical care.
Cost Considerations for Multi-Pet Households
For families with more than one pet, the advantages of mobile veterinary care become even more noticeable. Beyond convenience, mobile care often simplifies scheduling, reduces stress, and makes ongoing healthcare easier to manage for every pet in the household.
One Visit for Multiple Pets
With WoofDoctor on Wheels, multiple pets in the same household can often be seen during a single visit. Only one travel fee applies per household, regardless of how many pets are examined. Each pet still receives an individualized exam and care plan, but families avoid the cost and logistics of multiple separate appointments.
In a traditional clinic setting, each pet often requires its own appointment, transportation, and waiting room time. For households with two, three, or more pets, this can quickly add up in both time and expense.
Time & Scheduling Savings
Coordinating care for multiple pets can be one of the biggest challenges for pet parents. Mobile visits allow all pets to be seen during one scheduled window, reducing the need to take time off work, juggle childcare, or make repeated trips across town.
This is especially valuable for busy households, families with young children, and pet parents caring for senior or special-needs pets. Simplifying scheduling makes it easier to stay consistent with preventive care, follow-ups, and routine wellness services.
Reduced Stress for Pets & People
Many pets experience significant anxiety when traveling or waiting in a busy clinic. This stress often multiplies in multi-pet households, where pets may feed off each other’s anxiety or require separate handling and restraint.
Being examined at home allows pets to remain in a familiar environment, which often leads to calmer behavior, easier handling, and more accurate exams. Reduced stress can also mean fewer repeat visits, less need for calming medications, and smoother follow-up care over time.
Fewer Hidden Costs
Traditional clinic visits often come with indirect costs that are easy to overlook, such as fuel, parking, time away from work, and repeat visits when stress interferes with a thorough exam.
Mobile veterinary care removes many of these hidden costs by bringing the veterinarian, equipment, and services directly to your home. For multi-pet families, avoiding repeated travel and multiple appointment days can translate into meaningful long-term savings.
Coordinated Preventative Care
Seeing multiple pets together allows preventive care to be coordinated more effectively. Annual exams, vaccinations, diagnostics, and routine wellness needs can often be addressed in a single visit, helping ensure no pet falls behind due to scheduling challenges.
Consistent preventive care supports earlier detection of health issues, when treatment is often simpler and less costly. Making care easier to access increases the likelihood that every pet receives timely, appropriate attention.
Real-World Benefits for Multi-Pet Families
For households with multiple cats or dogs, mobile care often transforms veterinary visits from a logistical challenge into a manageable routine. Families avoid repeated clinic trips, reduce stress for anxious pets, and find it easier to care for senior or chronically ill animals who need more frequent monitoring.
Over time, the ability to coordinate care, reduce stress, and simplify scheduling helps improve follow-through with veterinary recommendations and can reduce unexpected emergencies.
For multi-pet households, mobile veterinary care is not just a convenience. It is a practical, efficient way to support the health and well-being of every pet in the home while saving time, reducing stress, and making ongoing care easier to manage.
Preventative Care, Chronic Care, & Long-Term Value
Veterinary care is not just about treating illness. It is about preventing disease, identifying problems early, and supporting your pet’s comfort and quality of life over time. Understanding what care typically looks like at different life stages helps families plan realistically and avoid surprises.
Preventive care is not one-size-fits-all. The type and frequency of care your pet needs depends on their age, species, lifestyle, and overall health.
Preventative Care for Healthy Adult Pets
Preventive care plays a major role in long-term health and cost management. Regular wellness exams, screening tests, and early intervention help:
- Detect issues before they become emergencies
- Reduce the likelihood of advanced or costly disease
- Support comfort, mobility, and longevity
For most healthy adult pets, you can expect the following preventive care each year:
- One to two comprehensive veterinary exams per year
Many adult pets benefit from annual exams, while seniors or cats often benefit from twice-yearly visits. - Vaccines administered once a year:
- Cats:
- Core: FVRCP
- Non-Core (based on individual risk factors): FeLV
- Dogs:
- Core: Distemper combination
- Non-Core (based on individual risk factors): Leptospirosis, Lyme, Bordetella, Canine Influenza
- Cats:
- Rabies vaccines administered based on state regulations:
- 1 Year Booster
- Every 3 years, if permitted by state regulations (e.g., South Carolina). Otherwise, every year.
- Parasite prevention medication to prevent fleas & heartworms (either monthly preventative pill or annual injections)
- Annual Heartworm test (dogs only)
- FeLV/FIV Testing (cats only- based on the patient’s history)
- Routine screening & bloodwork as recommended based on age & risk
Even healthy pets often need one or two additional visits per year for common, non-emergency issues. These are normal parts of primary veterinary care and may include:
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Ear infections
- Skin infections or itching
- Limping or mobility changes
Additional preventive or periodic needs may include:
- Diagnostic tests such as blood work, urinalysis, X-rays, or ultrasound
- Dental cleanings every few years, depending on oral health
- Short-term medications (antibiotics, anti-nausea medications, anti-inflammatories)
- Anxiety-related medications for travel, fireworks, or storms
- Routine care such as nail trims, ear cleaning or plucking, and anal gland expression
- Supplements to support long-term health, such as fish oil or joint supplements
Preventative Care for Puppies & Kittens
Puppies and kittens require more frequent visits during their first year to support proper growth, immune system development, and behavior.
During the first year of life, visits typically focus on:
- Growth and development monitoring
- Vaccine series
- Parasite prevention guidance
- Nutrition and feeding recommendations
- Early behavior and socialization support
For Healthy puppies and kittens, you can expect the following preventive care during their first year:
- Approximately four exams during the first year, often aligned with vaccine appointments
- Vaccines typically begin around 6–8 weeks of age and are boosted every 3–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks, with timing adjusted based on individual needs.
- Cats:
- Core: FVRCP, FeLV (recommended for all kittens under one year of age, regardless of lifestyle)
- The FVRCP vaccine is started early and boosted every 3–4 weeks until kittens are around 16 weeks old. The FeLV (feline leukemia) vaccine is given as an initial dose followed by a booster 3–4 weeks later, helping protect kittens from this serious virus as they grow.
- Core: FVRCP, FeLV (recommended for all kittens under one year of age, regardless of lifestyle)
- Dogs:
- Core: Distemper combination
- The distemper combination vaccine is started early and repeated every 3–4 weeks until puppies are at least 16 weeks old, helping protect them during this most vulnerable stage of life
- Non-Core (based on individual risk factors): Leptospirosis, Lyme Disease, Bordetella, Canine Influenza
- Vaccines for Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease, and Canine Influenza are given as an initial dose followed by a booster 3–4 weeks later.
- Core: Distemper combination
- Cats:
- Rabies vaccines administed based on state regulations:
- Initial given at 12-16 weeks of age, depending on state regulations
- 1 Year Booster
- Parasite prevention medication to prevent fleas & heartworms (either monthly preventative pill or annual injections).
- ProHeart is a long-acting heartworm prevention given by injection, with age requirements to keep pets safe. Puppies must be at least 6 months old to receive ProHeart 6, which provides 6 months of protection, and 12 months old to receive ProHeart 12, which lasts a full year. Your veterinarian can help determine the right option based on your puppy’s age and health.
- Annual Heartworm test (dogs only)
- FeLV/FIV Testing for Cats (Usually done one time when the result is negative and based on the patient’s medical history.)
Even healthy puppies and kittens may still require additional visits for common concerns such as:
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Skin or ear infections
- Limping or minor injuries
- Parasite concerns
These visits, while unplanned, are a normal part of caring for young animals and should be anticipated when planning for veterinary care during the first year. Additional preventive or periodic needs may include:
- Diagnostic tests such as blood work, urinalysis, X-rays, or ultrasound
- Short-term medications (antibiotics, anti-nausea medications, anti-inflammatory)
- Anxiety-related medications for travel, fireworks, or storms
- Routine care such as nail trims, ear cleaning or plucking, and anal gland expression
Ongoing Care for Pets with Chronic Conditions
Pets with chronic or long-term medical conditions often require more frequent monitoring and support. Mobile veterinary care can make this process easier and less stressful, which improves consistency and outcomes.
In addition to the care needed for a healthy adult pet, ongoing care for pets with chronic conditions may include:
- More frequent veterinary exams and rechecks
- Regular lab monitoring
- Prescription diets or targeted nutritional support
- Long-term medications
- Monthly injections such as Librela or Solensia
- Diagnostic imaging such as X-rays or ultrasound
- Advanced diagnostics when indicated
- Supportive therapies such as laser therapy or PRP
- Co-management with board-certified veterinary specialists without referral delays
Pets with chronic conditions should also be expected to experience occasional flare-ups or unrelated illnesses. These pets often need:
- Additional diagnostic testing
- Short-term medications for secondary issues
- More frequent monitoring and adjustments to care plans
Planning for these needs helps reduce surprises and allows for proactive management rather than crisis-driven care.
Long-Term Value of Mobile Veterinary Care
Preventive care is not only about avoiding illness. It is about supporting your pet’s comfort, mobility, and quality of life over time.
Mobile veterinary care enhances preventive care by:
- Reducing stress that can mask symptoms or affect exam findings
- Allowing longer, more thorough exams
- Improving observation of behavior and mobility in the home
- Increasing follow-through with recommendations
- Supporting stronger veterinarian–client relationships
When pets are calmer and visits are unhurried, subtle changes are more likely to be noticed early. Earlier detection often means simpler treatment, fewer complications, and lower long-term costs.
Preventive care is an investment in your pet’s future health. When combined with thoughtful planning, consistent monitoring, and individualized recommendations, it helps families feel prepared, confident, and supported through every stage of their pet’s life.
Planning Ahead: Care Plans & Transparent Pricing
Clear, honest communication about cost is a core part of care at WoofDoctor on Wheels. During each visit, we take time to review recommendations, explain options, and discuss estimated costs so you can make informed decisions without pressure or surprises.
Veterinary care is not one-size-fits-all, and neither is financial planning. Our goal is to help you understand what your pet needs now, what they may need in the future, and how to plan in a way that fits your household.
How We Discuss Recommendations & Costs
During your appointment, we walk through care decisions together. This includes:
- Our medical recommendations based on best practices and your pet’s health
- Alternative or stepwise options when appropriate
- How urgency, timeline, and risk factor into each choice
- Your values, goals, and budget considerations
- Your pet’s behavior, stress level, and tolerance for certain procedures
We believe collaborative decision-making leads to better outcomes. Whenever possible, we present multiple options so you can choose the path that makes the most sense for you and your pet.
Care Plans: Planning for the Expected
To help families plan ahead, WoofDoctor on Wheels offers care plans designed to support routine wellness and long-term health.
Care plans are intended to:
- Spread preventive care costs over time
- Encourage consistent wellness exams and early detection
- Reduce unexpected out-of-pocket expenses
- Make it easier to stay on track with routine care
When choosing a care plan, we recommend considering:
- How often your pet is likely to need veterinary visits
- Your pet’s age, lifestyle, and health history
- Whether they may benefit from more frequent monitoring
- Which plan best fits your pet’s expected needs over the year
You can learn more about:

Planning for the Unexpected: Emergencies & Pet Insurance
Even with excellent preventive care, unexpected illness or injury can still happen. That’s why we often recommend thinking about both care plans and pet insurance, as they serve different but complementary purposes.
- Care plans help manage the cost of routine, preventive, and planned care.
- Pet insurance can help offset the cost of emergencies, surgeries, or major unexpected medical events.
We encourage families to consider pet insurance early, while pets are young and healthy, before pre-existing conditions develop. You can learn more about how pet insurance works and how to choose a plan here.
You can also explore our care plan options or read our care plan blog to learn how care plans can help manage routine costs and determine which option is the best fit for your pet.
Transparent Pricing You Can Review Anytime
We believe you should be able to understand pricing on your own time, not just during an appointment. For that reason, we provide clear pricing information for both:
Having access to this information allows you to plan ahead, compare options, and feel confident about the care decisions you make for your pet.
A Different Way to Think About Cost
Mobile veterinary care isn’t about replacing every clinic or emergency hospital visit. It’s about delivering high-quality primary care in a way that is calmer, more accessible, and better aligned with real life.
When you consider the time saved, the reduced stress on your pet, and the ability to coordinate care more efficiently, many families find that mobile veterinary care offers strong value — not just in dollars, but in experience and outcomes.
